Applied Medical Anthropology
Applied medical anthropology is the application of anthropological theories and methods to health interventions, for example, in international and domestic health projects (Joralemon, 2010: 137).
There are many examples of applied medical anthropology being put to use. Two examples are applied medical anthropologists working for the government and working for nonprofit organizations. While working for the government a medical anthropologist would use methodological ideas and their expertise to help devise campaigns to educate the population on a topic. If they were to be working for a nonprofit organization the anthropologist would be more of a social activist. They would look at socioeconomic conditions as a reason for health issues, and they would use social reform as a type of intervention (Joralemon, 2010:92). Applied medical anthropology is used to solve many problems in many different areas. It is used in areas such as health, medicine, museums, education, environment, and many other areas. |
